Puzzlewood - A magical day out in the Forest of Dean

What is the Magic of Puzzlewood? Could it be the maze of pathways winding through the gulleys of mossy rocks, the twisted roots of the yew trees or the bridges, lookouts and other things you can find on your way round?  Puzzlewood is a unique and enchanting place, located in the beautiful and historic Forest of Dean. Explore a mile of meandering pathways, with its fantastic tree and rock formations, through this 14 acre ancient woodland. It has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood you have visited. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood, and it's easy to see why.

As well as the woods we have lots of animals, a willow maze, indoor mazes and a toddler racing track, an outdoor playground, plenty of picnic benches, a cafe and gift shop with lots of local crafts. The magical scenery of Puzzlewood has made it a popular location for filming and to date we have played host to a number of exciting television dramas including Dr Who, Merlin and Atlantis.

Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust and The Forestry Commission have worked in partnership for the last 30 years to create this vital Sculpture Trail that enjoys visitors of over 300,000 people per year.  We rely on donations and fundraising to commission new works for the trail.

The works were deliberately discrete in the woodland. The idea being that visitors would have to seek them out or come across them by chance. However, their popularity demanded footpaths and signposting. Nevertheless, the Forest is not a gallery. It is a location, a place, an industry, an environment, a dwelling place for flora and fauna and a site for leisure activity. The sculptures and the environment are of equal value and do not  compete for attention. The Forest of Dean has a fascinating history and the immediate impression of rural idyll and romantic landscape belies the historical tensions between industrial and sylvan, man-made and natural, utopian and dystopian, settlements and forest, all of which have shaped this unique environment. As such it presents a rich source of inspiration – not only for artists – but for everyone.

We invite visitors to enjoy the works on a wide range of levels. You will not find labels and information on the route, but instead are encouraged to investigate the sculptures in your own way. You, of course, will bring with you your own stories, narratives and experiences which will influence the way you encounter these artworks in the forest. We hope you enjoy them now and come back again soon – either in another season (as these sculptures enjoy ever-changing visual contexts) or to see the new works as they appear over the next phase of commissioning.

The collection of trees has been added to over the years and now contains species found from around the globe. The Arboretum is managed by the Forestry Commission with the help of a team of local volunteers. Hillside Brewery - Beer Tasting and Experience Days

We are only a small brewery and we are very proud of that. In fact writing this website is stopping me doing deliveries or helping our head brewer with the latest creation! And it is that creation, that passion to enjoy another great beer that keeps us getting up in the morning (although the view does help!). We love what we do and, to be honest, the people we do it with and who we do it for. Be that a cask going to a pub locally or, as our reputation grows, further afield or it a group coming in for a brewery tour. The enthusiasm they have for us to produce a great tasting beer is more than enough for us to head in to the brewery and get the mash tun going! Our range is evolving as we realise what our customers like and, ok let’s be honest, what they don’t! We now have a great core range which we brew and we are adding craft specials to this selection on an ongoing basis.

Now all we ask is take a look around the website, try a beer, book on to a tour or use our great venue to host an event – whatever it is we just want you to like what we do and let us know what you think as well. Superb experience days at Hillside. All are experience days are suitable for over 12’s and can even enjoy the brewery tour but unfortunately they won’t be able to sample the beer until they are over 18!

Severn and Wye Smokery

Severn & Wye Smokery is situated between these two great salmon rivers on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean. Starting with two flagship products, smoked wild salmon and smoked eel, the business has grown to produce a full range of smoked fish products.  The Rivers Severn and Wye are synonymous not only with wild salmon but also with my passion, the elver and eel, the two rivers being one of Europe’s biggest elver fisheries. I am very privileged to have spent my childhood fishing and collecting this Silver Harvest with my father. I gained invaluable life experience which has formed the basis of my decision to start Severn & Wye Smokery.

Forest Of Dean Wildlife Tours

Forest of Dean Wildlife Tours is a guided tour company, based in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The forest covers an area of approx 42 sq miles, and features an incredible variety of habitat types. Here in the forest we have a wealth of SSSIs (Site of Special Scientific Interest), as well as numerous nature reserves. The RSPB have their Nagshead reserve here and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust have a reserve in the centre of the forest at Crabtree Hill and Woorgreens Lake.

With such a high concentration of amazingly diverse habitats in the forest, it’s hardly surprising that you can find a huge number of different bird, mammal, plant and invertebrate species here.

Our aim is to help you see the best the forest has to offer, to help you enjoy the wildlife and to encourage understanding of how important these wildlife populations are. If you’re still new to wildlife watching then we can identify species for you and you’re welcome to ask as many questions as you like!

Our tours take in fantastically diverse areas of the forest, with the aim of showing you the wealth of wildlife here. We include the use of a spotting scope to help identify more wary species from a respectful distance to avoid disturbance . We also have a range of reference books to help identify different bird and invertebrate species.

Silver Circle Distillery

Silver Circle Distillery produce handmade craft spirits in the Monmouthshire village of Catbrook, deep in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We launched the distillery in June 2019 with the aim of developing an exciting spirits brand that uses local ingredients in unique products that are synonymous with the Wye Valley. We are a Welsh distillery and proud to be part of a growing scene of craft spirits producers in Wales.

Wye Valley Gin is our first and signature product. Inspired by the lush woodland and meadow walks that criss cross through the valley, Wye Valley Gin combines the fresh, leafy flavours and floral notes of wild local botanicals with the tang of grapefruit. A vibrant, flavourful gin that is as unique as it is drinkable and a statement of what can be expected from the distillery in the future.

We also produce a small batch series of limited edition products which has so far included a honey and black pepper infused gin and a blackberry liqueur made with blackberries picked locally through a cooperative scheme we set up. Look out for more small batch products in the series in 2020.

The distillery is open to the public every Thursday between 10am and 4pm and hosts regular cocktail nights. From March 2020, a “Distil Your Own Gin” workshop will take place every Saturday afternoon.
